Pakistan Erupts After Team’s Win Against India in T20 World Cup

INTERNATIONAL: There have been wild celebrations across Pakistan after Sunday’s win over their historic rivals India in the Twenty20 World Cup in Dubai. India aren’t yet out of the World Cup, as this was just a group stage game, but given the scenes on the streets of the capital, you’d be forgiven for thinking Pakistan had won the tournament.

They gathered in shopping malls, restaurants and social clubs to watch their captain, Babar Azam, lead from the front to win the game by a full 10 wickets. It’s the first time Pakistan have ever beaten India at a World Cup match and they went crazy in celebration, with fans such as Anam Afzal struggling to get his head around it:

"The match was superb, so exciting that I just cannot explain it. The best performance was by Babar Azam. Throughout the game, the players cheered up our hearts. I want to tell the team that the prayers of the entire nation are with you. Keep playing like this. Keep making the nation proud, and especially keep defeating India in the same manner."

Even Prime Minister Imran Khan, himself a former cricketer, got in on the action, tweeting, “Congratulations to the Pakistani team & especially to Babar Azam who led from the front, as well as the brilliant performance of Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi. The nation is proud of you all."

The win puts Pakistan top of group 2 and India at the bottom. Pakistan next face New Zealand on Tuesday. India play the Black Caps on Sunday.
